As winter gives way to spring and nature revives, it’s time for us to prepare for storing away last season’s clothes and embrace the new season. However, when we open our closets, we may be greeted by an unbearable odor. This odor is often caused by prolonged storage in sealed containers, damp storage environments, and the growth of bacteria and mold on the clothes themselves. This smell not only affects the comfort of the clothes but can also pose a threat to our health.
Thoroughly Clean the Clothes
Before storing clothes, use appropriate detergents according to the fabric to thoroughly clean them. Residual sweat, oil, or food stains not only affect the appearance and lifespan of clothes but also become ideal breeding grounds for bacteria and other microorganisms.
White Vinegar
White vinegar is a natural household cleaning agent. Its acidic components can neutralize alkaline stains and odor molecules on clothes, thereby eliminating unpleasant odors. Adding a cup of white vinegar during the washing process can help remove odors from clothes. This method is gentle, eco-friendly, and does not damage fabrics. Additionally, pouring white vinegar into a spray bottle and lightly spraying it on clothes before letting them air dry can effectively eliminate musty odors or odors caused by prolonged storage.
Keep it Dry
Moist environments are a paradise for bacteria and mold growth. Therefore, before storing seasonal clothes, use a dryer or lay the clothes flat in a well-ventilated area to air dry completely. After storing the clothes, place moisture absorbers such as silica gel packs, bamboo charcoal packs, or dehumidifiers in the wardrobe or storage boxes to absorb excess moisture and keep the clothes dry. Additionally, regularly open the closet doors to allow air circulation, reducing the accumulation of moisture and odors.
Avoid Sealed Plastic Bags
Although sealed plastic bags can prevent dust, they hinder air circulation and may cause clothes to mold. Instead, use cotton or non-woven fabric bags for storage, as they have better breathability, help maintain the dryness of clothes, and absorb moisture inside the bags, further reducing the risk of clothes molding.
